Herbs and spices are a great element in cooking and they might even provide a medicinal benefit at the same time. When many of us buy herbs and spices, we head to the herb and spice aisle at the local grocery store. When these herbs and spices were ground and jarred, their flavor began to erode. By the time you get around to using them in your recipes, these herbs and spices are little more than packaged dust. It’s pointless to use herbs and spices in your cooking if they have little flavor. The growing popularity of herbs and spices and the ease of purchasing them over the Internet makes freshness a new opportunity for more buyers. It is easy to find herbs and spices for sale on the Internet, but you need to take time to consider your options before cicking the “Buy” button. When you plunge into Internet shopping for herbs and spices, what issues do you need to consider? Consider our basic suggestions.
First, buy organic herbs and spices where they are available. Often herbs and spices thrive under organic methods of production. The organic herb or spice option may even be more flavorful and have a higher antioxidant content. Of course, if you are buying the product for its health benefit, an organic item (grown without the use of chemicals) is probably a better choice. You may pay more; you may not. The price depends on the production techniques for that item. Three spices I’ve had success buying online are caraway seed, cardamom pods, and cinnamon powder.
Second, choose the whole leaf herb and whole spice over the powdered option. A whole leaf or whole seed or spice will maintain its freshness longer. Try an experiment: fresh grind some nutmeg and smell the pungency. Then compare that smell with pre-ground nutmeg in a bottle. The difference will be striking. With a whole leaf or spice, get out a coffee mill and grind it when you are cooking or baking. Savor the freshness when you fresh grind the herb or spice in your kitchen. Every dried herb will crush to some extent in packing and shipping, but you want one that resembles a leaf to the greatest extent possible.
Third, for optimal freshness, store your herbs and spices in glass jars with well-fitting lids. For bulk storage, store the jars in a cool, dark place like a pantry. You can put smaller portions into little containers in your spice rack. You can always use old spice jars for your new purchase. If you do so, wash and dry them thoroughly. Dry the containers in the oven or in the sun to make sure they are dry enough that mold does not develop in your new herbs and spices. Do relabel your reusable jars to avoid future confusion and aggravation.
Consider these tips and find a reputable vendor of organic herbs and spices.
