Setting up an office at home can be challenging especially because you also have to consider how it will affect your home. You have to think about how to make it complement your home interiors. Also think about how you can keep it functional and organized for the most part.
Having a home office means you have some private space where you can go about your responsibilities. It still doesn’t entirely separate you from the duties that you have to attend to in your home. Therefore it is necessary to identify the boundaries that you must constantly remind yourself of if you want this kind of set up to work for you.
Here are some of the things you can start doing when setting up an organized home office:
Choose Your Home Office Furnishings
Choosing the appropriate home office furnishing is a crucial part of your home office design. Make sure that you use furnishings that allow easier home office organization as well as enable you to maximize the space available in your home. See to it that you are provided with enough storage area and room for your desk. This will allow you to do your paperwork more comfortably. Filing cabinets and drawers should also be available where you can keep important files.
If you can use a separate room for your home office, this is of course the best. If not, don’t limit your office space too much. A small desk won’t give you a good business feeling!
Arrange Your Files
Make sure to have a reliable filing system that lets you organize your files easily. Allow yourself to immediately locate those documents that you need, when you need them. The tried and tested method of filing alphabetically with recent dates closest to the front of the file is still a very effective way to organize. Place a trash can within your working area. This is the best way to keep wastage from piling up in your workstation.
Organize Your Desk
Having a desk that’s full of clutter is very distracting so keep your desk free from unnecessary papers. Choose the computer set that allows you to maximize the space on your desk. Don’t re-use junk mail and other scraps of paper you think of recycling but never get around to doing at all. Make sure your desk has designated places for all office supplies and where you can keep them out of sight when not being used. Before you end the day take time to clear your desk from trash and return files, supplies and equipments to their proper places.
Keep Cables and Wires Out of Sight
You don’t want to show off cables and wires coming out from all sides of your desk and distracting your view when working. Make sure that you organize all the equipments in your working area. Place them in proper places.
Organize Your Computer Desktop
Aside from the physical work area you should also organize your tangible desktop. Make use of software applications that help you organize your appointments, emails and other important files in proper order.
A great way to organize your digital document is by using a master mindmap. This is a visual overview that shows you in one overview all your important information.
Follow a Schedule for Cleaning
Keep your work area clean. Do not end your day without first clearing up your desk from mess that accumulated. Practice returning things in proper order after every use.
Keeping your home office organized is very important as it can greatly affect your productivity and mental state. I don’t think you would even wish to work in a messy workstation where everything seems out of place. You will surely get disoriented with all the chaos you have to face every single day. As a result completing your duties will also become very difficult.
